Zentokuji Moritosha
'Moritosha' in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is a special accommodation facility located within the grounds of the renowned Johana Betsuin Zentokuji Temple, which boasts a history of 550 years. It is a renovated and regenerated building originally designed by Keiichi Yasukawa, a woodworker and architect who was a beloved disciple of Soetsu Yanagi, as Zentokuji's training hall, with the second floor serving as a hotel and the first floor as a lecture hall, cafe, and shop.
This facility was established as a place to experience the 'Mingei' (folk craft) philosophy advocated by Soetsu Yanagi and the spiritual climate of 'Dotoku' (local virtue/character) he discovered in Toyama. In fact, Soetsu Yanagi has a historical connection to this Zentokuji temple, having written his culminating work on Mingei thought, 'The Dharma Gate of Beauty,' during his stay here. Mingei items are displayed throughout the building like in a museum, allowing guests to feel the traditional Japanese aesthetic sense and the charm of handwork.
The entire building is designed and decorated based on Mingei principles, creating a simple yet warm space. Guest rooms and common areas feature handcrafted furniture and furnishings by local artisans, beautifully fusing traditional techniques with modern design.
The cafe on the first floor serves simple and flavorful dishes utilizing local ingredients. The shop offers beautiful items that complement daily life, such as regional crafts and foods, providing opportunities to engage with the local food culture and handwork.
Being located within the Zentokuji temple grounds, enjoying the seasonal nature is also a charm. 'Regenerative Activities' that allow contact with local traditional culture, livelihoods, festivals, etc., are also offered, enabling a deep connection with the region's nature and culture.
It is an inn recommended for those interested in Japanese traditional culture and Mingei, or those wishing to refresh mind and body in a quiet environment.
